Wilkinsons of Pontefract

Wilkinsons of Pontefract

In 1900 there were 11 companies producing liquorice sweets in Pontefract. Today there are only two companies still manufacturing Pontefract Cakes, Haribo and Wilkinsons.
Local juice made by macerating the roots of liquorice from the liquorice fields surrounding the town was supplemented with dried liquorice juice from Spain (hence the Yorkshire dialect for liquorice "Spanish".

Wilkinsons of Pontefract were taken over by Bassetts in 1961.

In 1999 Trebor Bassett created Monkhill Confectionery , a seperate company, to look after traditional brands like Sharp's Toffees and Wilkinson's Pontefract Cakes.
